Our Guiding Principles for Decision-Making:

  • Plan what is in the best interest of students and staff, and implement what is practicable for education at Southern Door by prioritizing student and staff health, safety and well-being.
  • Focus on student achievement and mental health wellness and honor the identified special needs of students.
  • Refer to relevant DHS Guidance and consult with our Door County Public Health Official when making any plans to promote practices and policies to minimize health and safety risks involving students and staff and support the district's capacity to be flexible and responsible when facing changing health circumstances.
  • Evaluate district obligations and responsibilities. Consult with liability insurance carrier to understand potential liability and exposure to risk when planning any activity that involves students, families and community.
  • Make local decisions based on a review of state law, rule or guidance and local policy. Maintain close alignment in priorities with the Board of  Education in decision making and communications. Consult with independent district counsel in making plans or decisions prior to implementation.
  • Ensure that hygiene-and-health-related practices and procedures are evidence-based, clearly communicate, and effectively implemented.
  • This plan is contingent upon the most recent county, state and federal orders and must be flexible and nimble in responding to new information.
